idea who or what is in the car they are approaching.<\/p>\nif the driver has committed a crime, perhaps a serious one, seeing the police officer approach might cause them to panic and behave in an police were trained to touch the back of the vehicle as they approached it to leave a fingerprint on the car. this acted as a kind of security net if anything went wrong.<\/p>\nfor example, if a criminal thought they were about to be arrested \u2013 perhaps for a murder or other serious crime \u2013 and out of desperation, decided to do try to escape, there would be some evidence to link the police officer to that vehicle.<\/p>\nif the police officer was then killed or seriously injured, and the criminal claimed that the car had not been anywhere near the officer or the scene of the crime, the fingerprint on the back of the vehicle would prove otherwise.<\/p>\nof course, fingerprints can be washed off and will quickly disappear with exposure to sunlight, rain etc., but at least it would give something for other officers to look for.<\/p>\n<h2>why do they still do it?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\nthis is all very well and makes sense \u2013 but why do officers still do it now in an age where every car has a dashcam and every cop has a bodycam?<\/p>\nwell, these new technologies haven\u2019t been around for so long, and older officers may just do it out of habit. after all, if you\u2019ve been doing it that way for 15 years, you may find that old habits die hard.<\/p>\nplus, it still gives you one other piece of evidence in case everything else fails.<\/p>\nbut there are a couple of other reasons, too.<\/p>\n<h2>to spook criminals?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\nanother reason why police officers touch cars is that it is a technique designed to surprise potential criminals and regular, law-abiding citizen who may just have been driving slightly over the speed limit.<\/p>\nhowever, it\u2019s a question of numbers. if the police officer stops 100 drivers, or even 1,000, eventually, one of them will have something to hide or will behave unpredictably.<\/p>\nfor this reason, when police officers approach cars, they tune their senses to detect any signs that all is not well.<\/p>\nby placing a hand on the car, they might sense unusual movement in the vehicle. perhaps it could just be the family dog \u2013 but until the police officer knows that for sure, tiny signs
